Fast Facts

Solar Energy Consumer

  • One kilowatt-hour (kWh) equals the amount of electricity needed to run 90 x 11 watt light bulbs for 1 hours.
  • 1 kilowatt equates to 1000 watts.
  • A 1 kilowatt peak Solar System will generate around 1,600 kilowatt hours per year in a sunny climate and about 850 kilowatt hours per year in a cloudy climate like the UK.
  • A typical high power solar module generates 250 Watts and measures about 900 mm by 1600mm.
  • A 1 kilowatt Solar System (about 5 solar modules) requires about 5.76 square metres of installation area. Double the square area, if you are using thin film technology modules (this technology represents about 10% of all modules sold, however the market share is incresing year on year).
  • A 1 kilowatt solar PV system installed costs about £2,300. Prices will vary depending upon a) the kind of PV System, b) how the system is purchased and c) the surface to which the system is attached d) access.
  • A 4.0 kilowatt (4000 watts) system takes approximately one and two days to install.
  • The solar module (also called a "solar panel") itself accounts for between 40-50% of the total cost of an installed solar energy system.
  • A sunny location (i.e. Africa) receives approximately 5.5 hours per day of sunlight on average throughout the year. A cloudy location (i.e. Scotland) receives approximately 2.5 hours per day of sunlight on average throughout the year.
  • The typical main components of a grid connected solar system are the solar modules, an inverter, wiring and support structure.
  • The typical main components of stand alone solar system are the solar module, a battery, a charge controller (sometimes known as a regulator), wiring and support structure.
  • A typical silicon Solar Module will have a life in excess of 25 years. Its electric generating capacity may degradate gradually between 0-20% over its useful life.
  • Solar modules have a performance warranty for 25 years and a defects warranty for 10 years.
  • Yes, Solar Modules do produce electricity even on cloudy days, some 10-20% of that on sunny days (it can vary outside this range though). Solar Systems not connected to the electricity grid are "sized" to take account of this variation. Systems attached to the electricity grid balance their overall energy supply with supplies from the electricity grid.
  • You can buy multi-colored solar cells, but they cost more and deliver a little less energy. However, Architects prefer them.
  • Are you planning to buy a solar energy system? You are not on your own. Industry estimates that 100,000 systems have been installed in the UK alone.
  • Monthly average residential consumption of electricity in the UK in 2011 was 4200 kilowatt hours.
  • Average monthly residential electricity bill is £40 - £60.

Consumer Appliances - Annual kilowatt hour usage

Highest electricity consuming equipment in the UK in order of usage: electric ovens, microwaves, central air conditioning. Electric oven kilowatt hour consumption is twice that of air conditioning. Fastest growing consumer product: computers.
  • A 0.34 cubic metre refrigerator uses about 400 kilowatt hours per year
  • A 500 Watt portable heater uses about 150 kilowatt hours per year
  • A 3 ton central air conditioning system uses about 2500 kilowatt hours per year (assuming 5 months summer usage)
  • A clothes dryer (4 hours per week) uses about 1000 kilowatt hours per year
  • A 10 gallon fish tank with light and heater uses 400 kilowatt hours per year
  • Lighting for 5 rooms uses about 1000 kilowatt hours
  • A 100 Watt light bulb (for 5 hours a day) uses 180 kilowatt hours a year. Fluorescent lights use about 1/4 of the energy of a regular light bulb
  • A Color Television (6 hours a day) uses 600 kilowatt hours a year
  • A TV (3 hours a day) uses 200 kilowatt hours
  • A DVD player (3 hours a day) uses 75 kilowatt hours
  • A personal computer (10 hours a week) uses 150 kilowatt hours.
  • A small laser printer uses 90-100 watts while printing and 5 watts when electricity connected, but not printing.

Solar Partner provides corporate, small business and individual domestic customers with solar PV energy systems. We offer free no obligation surveys, system design, product supply and installation of your Solar Photovoltaic system for the Midlands area including Milton Keynes, Northampton, Buckinghamshire and Luton areas. Solar Partner is an MCS accredited company and completes all works in accordance with G83 & G59.

We design, build and install solar PV systems of any type and size; from domestic installation to small businesses to large commercial farms and office buildings including schools. Creating efficient attractive PV energy systems that perform well in the UK climate, we can help you reduce your electricity bills and generate income through the Feed in tariff (FiT).  Using our solar computer software PVSOL we can design a solar system to optimise the kWh output from your roof to ensure that you obtain a high FiT return. Our goal is to reduce your carbon foot print and to ensure that you maximise your return on investment.

Based in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, we also work with companies, individual customers and farmers in the surrounding areas Bedford, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Luton, Cambridge, Buckingham, Aylesbury, Towcester Wellingborough and Dunstable to provide excellent value for money solar energy installations.

Solar energy for Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire
If you live in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire areas, Solar Partner can help. We can design, supply, install and commission a solar PV energy system suitable for your needs. Our experience in solar photovoltaic’s, project management and construction will ensure the best system for you at competitive price.
Solar Power for residential and domestic houses
If you have a south, east or west facing roof that is exposed to the sun then we can design a solar polycrystalline panel system for you. Maximising your roof area we will install a roof mounting system that will maintain the water integrity of your roof whist providing you with a highly efficient and value for money solar power system. Make money from you roof today - earn 41.3 pence for every kilowatt you produce and extra 3.0 pence for every kilowatt you export to the national grid. Payback periods can be as low as 8 years giving you 17 years of free electricity. Increase the value of your home whilst reducing your carbon foot print.

Solar photovoltaic energy for - Farms
Solar Partner is working with many farmers in Bedford, Aylesbury, Buckingham, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Northampton and Hertford to install quality solar power systems on their barns and outbuilding roofs. Solar Partner understands the needs of farmers and how much electricity they need and when. Solar PV electricity reduces the farms annual operating costs whilst providing a regular income stream from the FiT payments. Solar PV will also protect farms against rising electricity prices enabling better financial planning.
